General description
Mt. Elgon is the eighth highest mountain in Africa. The area around Mt. Elgon is one of the most attractive mountain areas in East Africa. On the Ugandan side is the highest point of the Wagagai with 4,321 m. During the ascent several vegetation zones are traversed. First you move through cultivated land, then through a forest zone with big bamboo trees. Then you walk through a mystical moor landscape with huge siences and lobelia. For the ascent no alpinistic knowledge is required. Good mountain equipment (shoes, rain gear, tent, stove, sleeping bag etc.) is required.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival (D)
After arrival in Entebbe, you will be transferred to your hotel in Kampala.
Overnight stay in a hotel.
Day 2: Transfer from Kampala to Budadiri(B,L,D)
From Kampala the transfer to Budadari takes place to the starting point of the trekking. Budadiri is a small place with simple accommodation. Overnight stay in a hotel
Day 3: Hike to Sasa Camp (2,900m) approx. 5-6 hrs. (B,L)
In a 5-6 hour hike, it first goes through cultural land steeply past some villages. Passing through a mighty cliff, the Maudangi Cliff. Two hours later, the Sasa River is crossed. Here grow some orchids. Then the Sasa River Camp (2,900 m) is reached. Overnight camping
Day 4: Hike to Mude Cave Camp (3500m) approx. 4 hours (B,L)
From the Sasa River, the path continues gently uphill through dense bamboo forest. As the trail progresses, it becomes steeper and requires some larger tree roots. After about 3 hours, the forest turns into open tree-heath landscape. After a 4-hour day hike, the Mude Cave Camp (3,500 m) is reached. Overnight camping
Day 5: Ascent of the Wagagai Peak (4321m) approx. 5-7 hrs. (B,L)
In a 5-7 hour hike the highest point of Mt. Elgon the Wagagai Peak (4,321 m) is climbed. From Mude Cave Camp, the trail first leads through moorland. After the mountain lake Jackson's Tarn has been passed, the Senezienbestände are becoming denser. A steep ascent leads to the crater rim and finally the highest point of the ascent. Then it's back to the Mude Cave Camp. Overnight camping
Day 6: Descent to Budadiri (5-7 hours) (B,L)
A 5-7 hour hike will take you back to the starting point of the trek at the Sasa River Camp in Budadiri. Overnight stay in a hotel
Day 7: Transfer from Budadiri to Kampala(B,L,D)
Today ends your eventful trekking tour in Mt Elgon NP. Overnight stay in a hotel
Day 8: Departure (B)
Your driver will take you to the airport in Entebbe in good time.
